Heads Up! We are not just going to give you the same run of the mill Queenstown activity information as you will find on a thousand other sites. You know why you are here, you know how much cash you have (or don’t). Instead here are some of our recommended places, bars & free things to do that our long term guests have loved. Straight from the horses’ mouth!
1. Deco Backpacker’s Epic Garden
We are serious, our garden just might be one of Queenstown’s best kept secrets! Deco is up on a hill overlooking the lake and central Queenstown. The views are epic and you can see across Lake Wakatipu to Remarkables Mountain Range and beyond.
Built before rampant development took over central Queenstown our garden is huge, with mature trees, hammocks and lots of space to chill out. Our guests often crank up the BBQ and our friendly vibe means everyone is invited. Most 5 star hotels don’t have this kind of indoor / outdoor living. Get amongst it!
2. Frisbee Golf in the Queenstown Gardens
You just need a frisbee and then you are set. Queenstown Gardens is one of the few parks in the world with its own competition standard frisbee golf course. Line up some friends and take each other on in a sudden death or “play by the rules” tournament.
Playing is free but watch out for other punters, kids & native birds – they don’t take kindly to getting hit. Then enjoy a fun & free couple of hours at your fingertips.
3. 1876 Bar Happy Hour
It pays to know where the happy hours are in Queenstown and 1876 Bar & Restaurant has one of the best. $6 drink specials and $10 meal specials will set you up for a good night. Set in Queenstown’s old courthouse they have a big outdoor deck and the vibe is always on after work hours. www.1876.co.nz
4. Patagonia’s on the Lakefront
Sometimes it feels hard on a budget when you can’t “go large” anything. But the lake views are free and if you twin that with a famous gelato icecream from Patagonia you will know you are living your best life! Our pick – the tramontana crunchy caramel – https://www.patagoniachocolates.co.nz/our-cafes/
